Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. She was only a young teenager when her father who worked as the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue the acting career. The route she took was not without obstacles. When she was in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. Then, she worked as an hat-checker at a night club before calling it quits and returning to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet with her ushering duties throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She took classes in drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
